Get to Know August Burns Red Drummer Matt Greiner

Matt Greiner, drummer of metalcore band August Burns Red, remembers the early days when he first started beating the drum kit. He picked up the Supertones’ album Supertones Strike Back, and he was hooked.

“I bought it on cassette at Creation Festival in 1999, and I remember bringing it home and getting reprimanded by my parents for the artwork,” he told Soundcheck. “I don’t know why it seemed edgy, but it was.”

Now, Greiner and his band — including Jake Luhrs (lead vocals), JB Brubaker (lead guitar), Brent Rambler (rhythm guitar) and Dustin Davidson (bass guitar, backing vocals) — are playing the entire the 2011 Vans Warped Tour, tearing up the stage in front of thousands of screaming kids every night. A Day to Remember, the Devil Wears Prada, Paramore and many more on the annual touring festival.

While Greiner digs the bands on Warped, right now, the CD he can’t put down is a disc of original worship songs by a band from his church in Harrisburg, Penn.

“It would be one by SisterBrother,” he said. “… It’s Christian material with Christian lyrics but the music is very folk-ish, and it’s just awesome. It’s not heavy. It’s not fast. It’s just the perfect music to listen to when you get up in the morning and when you go to bed at night.”

What bands should have been this year’s Warped Tour, Greiner says “it’s a tough call.”

“I’d like to see some indie bands on this tour,” he said. “… It would be incredible to see a worship band on the tour, like Jesus Culture or Hillsong United. It’d be a strange dynamic but I’d kill to see how it would go over.”

August Burns Red’s new album, Leveler, debuted No. 11 on the Billbaord 200 chart in June. The album is out on Seattle’s Solid State Records.
