Alternative rock / third wave ska band Sublime with Rome are in the studio

Sublime with Rome — which brings together former Sublime members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh and new vocalist Rome Ramirez in place of Bradley Nowell, who passed away in 1996 — are currently in Miami, knocking out a new album. Recording new material is always a thrill, and while Ramirez is used to singing Sublime’s original, alternative rock radio standards a la “Santeria,” “What I Got” and “Wrong Way,” he gets a tad more stressed with the current tracks.

“It’s a little bit of a different vibe because when I sing the new songs – you probably won’t believe this, but I actually put more pressure on myself because I’m so nervous about how those are coming across, as opposed to the old ones,” Ramirez told the Arizona Central. “I have such a blast, because to me, it’s like a party. I used to do that when I was in high school. I used to go to my friends’ parties and jam Sublime songs (laughs). So I’m up there living the dream.”

When Ramirez first got the call to join Sublime with Rome, the 23-year-old singer and guitarist admits he got weak in the knees. “I was a bit nervous. I’m not gonna lie,” Ramirez said. “Just because I’m such a big fan, I was super-nervous from the get. But once I got to hang out with them and jam with them and break bread, we just kind of got really close and it made it real natural. … It’s really easy to jam with those guys and just get lost playing tunes for hours.”

Ramirez isn’t even a tad bit worried about how fans will receive the new songs. He says audiences have been completely welcoming to him joining the lineup. “I have never experienced any sort of negativity to my face,” he said. “And we’re been doing this about two years. I mean, I’m sure I could go online and find some hate, but for the most part we play to sold-out crowds and we try to continue something amazing and something so positive and uplifting.” (Courtesy photo.
