Rocks stars including Slash and Bret Michaels are paying tribute to Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston, likely the most gifted singer of her era, passed away Saturday (Feb.11) at the age of 48. White Houston no doubt influenced a generation of pop singers, her powerful mezzo-soprano also inspired an unlikely breed of rock performers to carry their message with soul and passion.

As soon as the news broke of Houston’s untimely death, Tweets started pouring out from the rock community giving their condolences. After all, she was tight with rockers, as debut album was recorded on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “Definitive 200” list in 2007, and it was also named one of Rolling Stone‘s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” in 2003.

Jonny Hetherington of Canadian hard rock band Art of Dying Tweeted, “Sad to hear the voice of Whitney Houston has been silenced. Too young to go. Thankfully we have her recordings. -Jonny #whitneyhouston.”

Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction had this to say about Houston’s death: “Very sad to hear about Whitney’s passing.” The one and only Slash Tweeted, “Shattering news about Whitney. RIP.”

Memphis-based hard rockers Egypt Central Tweeted, “R.I.P. Whitney Houston. We respect your talent and will pray for your family.. EC”

Bret Michaels posted a lengthy statement on his Facebook page paying tribute to Houston: “My deepest condolences to Whitney Houston’s family and friends. I first met Whitney when we were in Rome on tour. I couldn’t sleep so I went down to the lobby. There she was sitting on the couch reading a book, apparently she couldn’t sleep either. We sat and hung out chatting for quite a while. She was awesome.” He added that the two performed in Rio for the Hollywood Rocks festival. “I happened to walk up to my room from the pool where a bunch of us had been sitting and saw the news about the Northridge earthquake. I remember telling her, the guys from Aerosmith and others about the news… Again… what a great person with a great voice and amazing talent. She will be missed.”
