Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger says his mom approves of his recently engagement to pop singer Avril Lavigne

Nickelback and Avril Lavigne’s fans weren’t the only ones surprised by Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger and Lavigne’s recent engagement. In an interview with Hello! Canada (via JAM! Music), Kroeger explained that he didn’t tell his parents about his engagement until after Lavigne gave him an unequivocal “yes.”

But, he parents weren’t upset that they were a little late to know. In fact, Kroeger says his mom is a huge Avril Lavigne fan, which made telling her the good news even better. “You never know what your parents are going to say when you tell them you’re getting married – especially when it’s with someone they haven’t met yet,” Kroeger stated. “My mom is a huge fan of Avril’s, so putting her on the speaker phone and telling her the news was hilarious and equally embarrassing.”

Lavigne still hasn’t met Kroeger’s parents, and Kroeger has still never trekked to Lavigne’s hometown of Napanee, Ontario. “I find that almost as terrifying as telling your parents you’re going to tie the knot,” he said. “You just never know when someone is going to come out of the woodwork with a story that starts off with, ‘Let me tell you about the time…’”

Lavigne added that even if fans were surprised by the engagement, everyone’s reactions have been pretty much stellar. Fans, friends and family alike are happy for the couple’s happiness. “Everyone is super stoked for us,” Lavigne told the magazine. “The reaction from our friends and family has been awesome!”
