Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis and the Dirty Projectors will guest on season three of ‘Portlandia’

IFC program “Portlandia” is serious when it comes to booking musicians with major alt-rock street credit for the show. For the show’s third season, Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis and Dirty Projectors will make appearances in upcoming episodes of the sketch comedy program, according to a report from EW.com.

J Mascis and Dirty Projectors will join a long list of musicians who have already made appearances on “Portlandia,” including Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, Modest Mouse vocalist Isaac Brock, Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy and the Shins frontman James Mercer, who all appeared in episodes during the first and second seasons of the show.

As for non-music stars slated to appear this season, “Portlandia” will welcome Juliette Lewis, Roseanne Barr, Patton Oswalt, Rose Byrne, Chloe Sevigny and tennis athlete Martina Navratilova. In other words, the show is booking celebrities from completely different ends of the spectrum.

“Portlandia” — which was dreamt up by Saturday Night Live’s Fred Armisen and Wild Flag frontwoman Carrie Brownstein — will kick off its third season Jan. 4 at 10 p.m. ET. For those who can’t wait until 2013, a special “pre-premiere” episode will hit the airwaves on Dec. 14.
