‘The SpongeBob Musical’ is in the works

A new musical based on the Nickelodeon TV series “SpongeBob SquarePants” is in the works, and the Flaming Lips and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are among the musicians who have signed on to contribute songs to the show.

According to Broadway in Chicago, “The SpongeBob Musical” will debut on June 7, 2016, at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre. The show will include original songs by Tyler and Perry, as well as They Might Be Giants, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, T.I., Lady Antebellum and more.

As for the movie’s premise, producers give this narrative of the show: “The end is here. Only one sponge can save the day. But he’s going to need help from some of the greatest songwriters in rock and music history.”

“The SpongeBob Musical” is scheduled to run through July 3, 2016, in Chicago. The show is slated to play on Broadway during the 2016-2017 season.

Bowie previously voice the character Lord Royal Highness in the Nickelodeon TV movie “SpongeBob’s Atlantis SquarePantis,” which aired in 2007.
