Florence and the Machine to Release ‘MTV Unplugged’ Album
Florence Welsh and company ready live acoustic release
South London alternative rockers Florence and the Machine are following in the traditions of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and countless other seminal artists by releasing a live album next month, taped at the band’s “MTV Unplugged” performance in December of last year. The album, simply titled “MTV Unplugged,” will arrive on CD and via digital download on April 9. Find the full track listing at the end of the post.
The group’s New York City performance featured frontwoman Florence Welch, three members of her group and a 10-piece gospel choir rocking out to an 11-song set. The variety-packed set list included two cover songs: one of Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” and the other of “Jackson,” the latter being the Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler track popularized Johnny Cash and June Carter. None other than Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme also joined Welch for a duet. The set also featured Florence and the Machine Favorites “Dog Days are Over” and “Shake It Out.” As for the star-studded audience, it included Kanye West and rap guy Q-Tip, among others.
Florence and the Machine are currently on the road in the U.K., playing their biggest European tour to date. The group plays three gigs at London’s Alexandra Palace this weekend. Last year, Welch and company opened on select dates for the North American leg of U2’s blockbuster 360 Tour, which really gave them a boost of exposure.
