Interview: Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge chats about the band’s latest album, ‘Fortress’

Alter Bridge are in full gear this fall, and they’re spending much of their days touring in support of their latest album, 2013’s “Fortress.” The band just wrapped up a stint at the first-ever Louder than Life festival in Louisville, Ky., and now, they’re playing club shows through the end of this month.

Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti, who also plays lead guitar in Creed, says writing and recording “Fortress” took Alter Bridge’s music to a new place-— one they’ve never been before.

“It shows the direction we keep trying to push ourselves in doing different things and expanding artistic boundaries and not being predictable,” Tremonti told Audio Ink Radio. “It’s our fourth chapter in doing that.”

Following the fall Alter Bridge run, Tremonti said he will work on finishing off his new solo album and, come January, hit Europe with Alter Bridge. As for Creed, he says the band has “no plans at the moment” to regroup for another tour or album.

With so many chart-topping rock songs under his guitar riffs, both in Alter Bridge and Creed, what makes a great, solid rock tune?

“It depends on what you look for,” Tremonti said. “With me, I like to hear emotion in a song and a passion behind it and meaning behind it. I’m not very good at writing a good, summer fun pop song, but it’s different for everybody.”
