Nirvana Bass Player Krist Novoselic Comments on Melvins Van Auction
Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic: ‘I remember the Mel-Van’
Earlier this week, we reported that a tour van previously used by the Melvins showcasing exterior artwork by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is currently up for sale on eBay. The classic, 1972 Dodge Sportsman Royal Van was affectionately known as the “Melvan” and served as the main vehicle for the band through many of their touring days.
With the van’s strong tie to Nirvana, it’s fitting that Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic would offer up his two cents about the auction. He did just that yesterday, Tweeting his thoughts about — and approval of — the sale: “If my ’65 VW van I drove in ’89 -’91 was for sale I’d buy it in a second!” he stated, also adding, “I remember the Mel-Van. It had mechanical problems even in the ’80s. Gas was like 99¢ back then so having poor mpg not so bad.”
The official item description on eBay states that the van is, “a very unique piece of MEVINS/NIRVANA history & truly one of a kind. The KISS Mural on the side was hand drawn by Kurt Cobain using sharpie markers shoplifted from the Thriftway grocery store in Montesano Washington. (former employer of King Buzzo) This was one of the first MELVINS tour vans & was used on at least one U.S. tour. Kurt himself was often times known to drive this van to local shows, also included are two former registration’s, one signed by Roger Osborne (King Buzzo) & the second signed by former MELVINS bass player Matt Lukin ! Bid High & Bid Often ,this will probably be your one & only chance to own this unique piece of music history !” Find more information on the van’s eBay page.
