Jack White Crafts World’s First 3 RPM Record

Former White Stripes frontman pioneers unique vinyl record

We already knew Jack White was talented at creating music out of thin air, and now, it seems he’s something of an inventor. Attendees at Jacks White’s Third Man Records third anniversary party a few weeks back were given a special treat at the show: the world’s first-ever 3 RPM, created by — who else? — Mr. White.

White gave everyone at the show their own 3 RPM record, which, in order to be heard, must be spun on a record player at three revolutions per minute. Right now, the slowest setting on most record players is 33 RPM, so it’s not the most practical gift. But, it’s the thought that counts, right?

The RPM, called “The First Three Years of Blue Series Singles on One LP at 3 RPM,” packs all 56 singles from the 28 bands taking part in Third Man Records’ Blue Series.

A message posted on the Third Man Records website explains the gift a bit more: “The world’s first 3 RPM record is a study in contradictions — it’s cut at the slowest speed yet it plays faster than anything you’ve ever heard. It’s easy to play but impossible to hear. You put your finger on it to slow it down, but this is no easy task…we estimate it would take 333 days of 33 hours training per day for your finger, hand, and arm muscles to spin at a continuous speed of 3rpm for X hours and X minutes.”
