Fun. Break Sales Record with ‘We Are Young’
Alternative indie group fun. are No. 1 with ‘We Are Young’ for a sixth week
The guys of fun. are having plenty of, er, fun with their latest hit, “We Are Young.” Billboard is reporting that the song, which is currently sitting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a sixth consecutive week, has also broken a digital sales record. “We Are Young” is the first track to ever score 300,000 or more digital downloads for six weeks. The only other track to come close to that that figure is Eminem and Rihanna’s pop hit “Love the Way You Lie,” which pushed over 300,000 copies for five weeks in 2010.
“We Are Young” has also just gone triple platinum, marking sales of three million copies. What makes that honor even sweeter is that it’s the only track thus far this year to reach that landmark.
John Janick, president and CEO of record label Fueled by Ramen and co-president of Elektra, says he knew “We Are Young” was a hit song the second he heard it. Even so, he didn’t have a clue how far the track out go. “It just felt like a massive record from the beginning,” Janick, who signed fun. to Fueled by Ramen, told Billboard of the ditty. “Not to say that we can foresee the future, but I’ve noticed in my life there’s very few projects where something feels special and you go after things and they come to you and things fall into place. This is one of those projects.”
