Ben Gibbard is set to release his debut solo album, ‘Former Lives,’ in October
Ben Gibbard has plenty of experience fronting a band from his time with Death Cab for Cutie and the Postal Service, and now, he’s at long last ready to do things on his own. Gibbard has announced that he will unleash his debut solo release, “Former Lives,” on Oct. 16. Death Cab for Cutie fans will be happy to note that although he’s releasing a solo effort, Gibbard isn’t giving up on the Cab.
“[‘Former Lives’] wasn’t a goal and it certainly wasn’t a reaction to any sort of dissatisfaction to recording with Death Cab or anything like that,” Gibbard told Stereogum. “I’m a songwriter and that’s my job, and with every record that we’ve made there would always be a couple of tunes that just didn’t seem to fit in with the band.”
“If people wanted to be dismissive of the record, they could just say, ‘Oh these are leftovers,’ but they’re really not. They’re not songs that weren’t good enough to make Death Cab records as much as they were things that … well, there’s not really place on a Death Cab record for a song that sounds like Big Star or Teenage Fanclub. It’s kind of not what we do, you know.”
The track list and tour dates for Gibbard’s new project are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
