Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ Bass Up for Auction
Bass smashed in Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ video could be yours
Nirvana fans got way too few years with the band before Kurt Cobain tragically took his own life in 1994, less than a year after releasing Nirvana’s third studio album, “In Utero.” Now, mega Nirvana devotees can get their hands on a rare item that might make them feel a bit closer to their favorite grunge rock trio.
The Irish Independent has listed that the bass guitar that Cobain famously smashed in the music video for the group’s 1991 breakthrough hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” is going up for auction to the public at Christie’s in London starting on Nov. 29. How much should someone expect to shelve out for the choice bass? According to estimates, the instrument is expected to garner between 15,000 and 25,000 pounds — roughly $24,000 to $40,000 — at auction.
The Irish Independent states that former bass player Krist Novoselic bought the bass guitar from a pawn shop, since he knew it was going to be destroyed during the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ filming. It’s not apparent who is actually selling the instrument, but rumor has it that the instrument was first taken by one of the extras in the ‘Spirit’ video.
