Pirate-inspired compilation album to feature songs from Courtney Love, Tom waits, Iggy Pop and more
Hole singer Courtney Love, former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe, singer-songwriter Tom Waits and punk legend Iggy Pop have all signed on to contribute tracks to a compilation of sea-themed songs that will honor the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.
The album, titled “Son of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys,” is the follow-up to a similar 2006 album of songs produced by Johnny Depp, Hal Willner and “Pirates of the Caribbean” series director Gore Verbinski called “Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.” Other interesting names on the 36-song set include Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Macy Gray, Johnny Depp, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, Patti Smith and Broken Social Scene. Look for the new release to reach stores and online outlets on Feb. 19.
As for how the new album will stack up to its 2006 counterpart, an official statement from Willner says to expect “a very different record than volume 1. This one seems … happier? Not as much about torture, sodomy and death, which will disappoint some but, we don’t need to repeat ourselves do we?”
