Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament says he’s optimistic that the band’s latest album will drop in 2013

Will 2013 be the year when Pearl Jam release their much-anticipated follow-up to 2009’s “Backspacer?” It’s possible, if you believe Pearl Jam bass player Jeff Ament.

“There’s a lot of ideas kind of floating around right now,” Ament told Rolling Stone, when asked about the new release. “I mean, the cool thing about taking a year away from [Pearl Jam] is, you know, we could almost start from scratch and it wouldn’t really be that big of a deal.”

While Ament is optimistic that the Pearl Jam new album will come out this year, he’ll be just fine if it doesn’t. After all, he always has new music brewing with his other band, RNDM. “I hope [the new PJ album] comes out this year at some point,” he said. “But, if it doesn’t, we have another RNDM record ready. If RNDM’s my band for the next year, I’m stoked.”

One thing is certain: Pearl Jam will play at least a couple of shows this year. The band recently dropped the news that they’ll perform at Budweiser Gardens in London, Ontario, Canada on July 16 and at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on July 19. The Chicago show was the fastest concert sell-out in Wrigley Field history, according to a post on the band’s official Facebook page.
