The Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ Set for Reissue
‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ the latest release in the Smashing Pumpkins’ reissue campaign
The Smashing Pumpkins’ comprehensive reissue campaign will release its latest collection July 23 when an expanded version of the group’s 1996 box set, “The Aeroplane Flies High,” hits stores. The release follows similar re-releases for “Gish,” “Siamese Dream” and “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.”
Bob Ludwig remastered the upcoming collection, which arrives in four different formats: a six-CD and single-DVD set, a five-LP vinyl set, a deluxe digital version and a standard digital edition. The physical and deluxe digital offerings feature 90 unreleased demos, alternate versions, unreleased demos, live recordings, rarities and more.
The reissue also packs a sixth disc in the CD set with live recordings from the Pumpkins’ famed 1996 “Mellon Collie” tour. The DVD in the package is taken from a July 4, 1997 concert in Belfort, France.
Fans of frontman Billy Corgan should note that the singer contributed detailed notes about every track in the reissue’s 46-page booklet. “What I like about ‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ is that it’s almost the existential backwater of the ‘Mellon Collie’ album,” Corgan wrote. “Listening to the music gathered here is a little bit like seeing what goes on behind the walls of Disneyland. At least for me, the behind the scenes feel heard on ‘The Aeroplane Flies High’ represents something revealing not found on the made album.”
