New band features members of Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Off!

Move over Velvet Revover, because there’s a new supergroup in town. Soundgarden bass player Ben Shepherd, Soundgarden (and Pearl Jam) drummer Matt Cameron, Off! guitarist Dimitri Coats and multi-instrumentalist Alain Johannes (former Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures) have joined up for a mysterious side project.

“I think we’ve laid down the foundation for, like, ten songs,” Coats told Billboard of the project. “I’m going to be singing. Alain’s definitely singing a bit. We might invite a couple of guests at some point.”

According to Coats, the band formed earlier this year in Seattle after a Facebook chat with Cameron. “I was like, ‘Dude! I’m a huge fan!'” Coats said. “I told him, ‘I consider myself to be a really excellent air drummer, and I have trouble air-drumming to some of your fills.’ And he was like, ‘Wow, that means a lot coming from you ’cause I’m a huge fan of yours.’ We became instant friends.”

One thing led to another, and Cameron ended up inviting Coats to jam with a project he started in 2008 with Shepherd and Johannes. Coats described the experience as, “I sort of felt like I was in the grunge Beatles.”

Expect from that’s “a little bit like ‘Superunknown,’ that kind of era of Soundgarden, mixed with Alain’s kind of Stevie Wonder vibe,” Coats added.

There’s no word yet on when the new tunes will drop, or when the guys will actually come up with a name for the project, but it will likely all shake out when Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Off! take a break from their busy schedules.
