Prince has passed away, confirms his publicist
Pop star Prince has passed away. Yvette Noel-Shure, Prince’s publicist, confirmed the death to the Associated Press. He was 57.
Prince, whose real name is Prince Rogers Nelson, was a singer, songwriter, producer, multiple instrumentalist and actor. The Minneapolis native was huge in the pop world but also greatly influenced many in funk, R&B, disco, soul and rock. He came onto the scene with his 1978 debut album, “For You” and quickly garnered a loyal fan base.
He really gain pop attention in 1984 with his semi-autobiographical rock musical drama movie “Purple Rain” and the film’s soundtrack. “Purple Rain” picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Music Score, and the soundtrack album sold more than 25 million copies.
Over the course of his career, Prince picked up seven Grammy Awards, one Golden Globe award, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. He also collaborated with a variety of superstars, including Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Cyndi Lauper and Patti LaBelle.
