Dream Theater’s ’12-Step-Suite’ will finally get played live
Famed drummer Mike Portnoy turns 50 next year, and in honor of the half-century milestone, the former Dream Theater drummer will play Dream Theater’s “12-Step Suite” in full for the very first time.
“12-Step Suite” encompasses five songs that span five different Dream Theater releases. Portnoy wrote the lyrics about his time recovering from alcoholism.
“When I came up with the idea of writing a multi-part suite that was to span 5 albums (which ended up taking 8 years to complete), it was always part of my masterplan to eventually perform it in it’s entirely live on stage,” writes Portnoy on Facebook. “It saddens me that I was not able to do so (with Dream Theater) after completing the final piece of my conceptual puzzle…but I’ve decided that I owe it to the fans to finally bring my 12 Step Suite to life on stage as I always envisioned.”
Portnoy parted ways with Dream Theater in 2010 following 25 years with the group. Portnoy is currently the drummer of the Winery Dogs.
Portnoy will play the “12-Step Suite” performance at the Cruise to the Edge concert cruise, which will take place from Feb. 7 to 11, 2017. For information, head to CruisetotheEdge.com.
