Review: Skillet Brings Uplifting Show to Grand Rapids
Christian hard rock band Skillet delivers an inspiring live show
Skillet’s latest studio album, “Unleashed,” oozes with fist-pumping rock anthems and the band’s trademark wholesome, uplifting messages of hope and unity. The album dropped in August, and now, the Christian hard rock band is on the road on their first headlining tour in support of “Unleashed.”
Skillet is known for delivering fiery live shows, and that reputation held true at the band’s concert at The Intersection in Grand Rapids on Thursday night (Oct. 6). Anyone who headed to the show expecting a watered-down rock concert because of the group’s Christian music label most likely left with a very different impression of the band.
Concertgoers stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the sold-out concert, many of them chanting along to Skillet’s chart-topping rock songs, such as “Monster,” “Awake and Alive,” “Not Gonna Die” and “Comatose.”
The group – which brings together singer and bass player John Cooper, guitarist and keyboard player Korey Cooper, guitarist Seth Morrison and drummer Jen Ledger – burst onto the stage performing their newest single, “Feel Invincible,” and then went back about 10 years to tear through their 2006 single, “Whispers in the Dark.”
The members of Skillet delivered an aggressive, driving rock sound live and showed off a proficient grasp of their instruments. While Skillet didn’t shy away from their faith-based mission, they were also inclusive. John Cooper at one point told the crowd that while he hoped people in the crowd were everything from atheists to agnostics, he wrote the song “Hero” about Jesus Christ.
The concert ended with as much energy as it began, with Skillet closing out the show with an encore of “The Resistance.” The band’s show the next night at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit sold out, too, so that’s a good sign Skillet will be back soon.
