Metallica Guitarist Kirk Hammett Has ‘Really, Really Great Music’ for New Album
Remember when Kirk Hammett admitted that during the several years between the release of “Death Magnetic” and Metallica’s newest album, “Hardwired… to Self-Destruct,” he had recorded around 500 riffs on his phone, but lost the phone?
Because of that incident, Hammett is much more aware of properly storing his musical ideas, and he’s going to make sure that mishap doesn’t happen again. In fact, Hammett says he currently has “about 500” fresh ideas for the next Metallica record.
“I went through this whole thing a couple of years ago of losing my iPhone with 500 ideas and I still haven’t fully recovered from that,” Hammett said in a recent video interview with British GQ. “And my way of recovering from that is overcompensating… On that phone was 500 ideas, and I have about 500 ideas now at this point, plus. I’m sitting on a lot of really…what I feel is really, really great music that is just waiting to be developed.”
Hammett added that he keeps gathering more and more ideas almost daily: “Every day, I’m just picking up my guitar and I’m thinking about those lost ideas and I’m thinking, ‘I’ve gotta generate more ideas,’ in the hopes that maybe one or two of those old 500 ideas that I lost might trickle through.”
“Maybe it’ll find its way through, and I’ll go, ‘Oh, yeah! Eureka!’ It hasn’t happened yet,” he continued. “It hasn’t happened, though.”
Metallica has spent much of this past fall on tour in Europe to support their latest record, “Hardwired… to Self-Destruct.”
