Metallica Performs Tribute to Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott in Ireland
Watch Metallica perform “Whiskey in the Jar” to honor late Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott
Metallica is currently touring Europe on their WorldWired tour, and last weekend, the metal men performed a killer show in Slane Castle in Ireland. In addition to their meaty originals, Metallica honored late Thin Lizzy frontman and famed Irish musician Phil Lynott while in town.
During the gig, Metallica performed their take on the Irish traditional “Whiskey in the Jar,” which Thin Lizzy originally recorded in 1972. As the song wrapped up, Metallica frontman James Hetfield yelled, “We love you, Phil!” Watch some official performance footage of the moment on YouTube below.
Hetfield also took to Instagram to share a photo of him standing next to Lynott’s Dublin statue. “Much respect and love to my favorite songwriter, Mr. Phil Lynott,” he wrote in the caption.
Metallic is continuing on their European tour this week, and Hetfield and company will return the States this September to perform two orchestra-accompanied concerts in San Francisco to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1999 live record, “S&M.”
In other news, in a new interview in the latest issue of Kerrang! magazine, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich hinted that the group might have another “Garage Inc.” covers album on the way. In the chat, when asked a fan question regarding what particular songs the band would cover if there would be another “Garage Inc.,” Ulrich stated, “Wait and see.”
