Harry Styles, The Weeknd Among Variety Hitmakers Award Recipients
Each year, Variety honors the greatest hitmakers of the year with their Hitmakers awards, and Harry Styles and The Weeknd are among the 2020 honorees
Harry Styles has scored numerous hits in his relatively short career, including this year’s “Golden,” which is one of this fall’s biggest pop hits. Now, singer has been given the title of Variety’s Hitmaker of the Year, largely because of the success of his popular sophomore album, “Fine Line,” and the singles off the record.
The magazine’s Hitmakers list honors those in the music industry who helped make the “25 most-consumed songs of the year,” according to Alpha Data. Before “Golden” dropped this fall, two of Styles’ other hits off “Fine Line” were among the most-consumed tracks of the year: “Adore You” and “Watermelon Sugar.”
Before there’s a great singer, there has to be a great songwriter, and Variety is also recognizing longstanding writer Lewis Capaldi as songwriter of the year. The magazine goes on to honor rapper Roddy Ricch as breakthrough artist of the year, Maren Morris as the crossover artist of the year and The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” as hook of the year. Variety plans to announce more honorees in the coming weeks.
Variety will release its fourth annual Hitmakers issue on Dec. 2. While the publication usually honors winners at an in-person event, this year’s Hitmakers event will take place during a special virtual event on Dec. 3.
