Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor Explains Why He Fought for ‘Shared Recognition’ at Rock Hall Induction
Trent Reznor says that when Nine Inch Nails was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he made sure every band member was given credit
When bands get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it seems certain band members often get left out.Trent Reznor wanted to make sure that didn’t happen when his band, Nine Inch Nails, got inducted into the Rock Hall.
When the band received the honors in 2019, Reznor made sure that he accepted the accolades alongside Reznor’s longtime collaborator and, eventually, band member Atticus Ross, plus current and former touring members Robin Finck, Ilan Rubin, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner and Alessandro Cortini.
In a new interview with Consequence of Sound’s Heavy Consequence, Reznor said he “felt it was the right thing to do” to induct several band members, instead of just Reznor, who is the brainchild of Nine Inch Nails.
“I think, kind of lazily, the approach was, ‘OK, we’re just going to induct you,'” Reznor said. “Then I thought I’d push back and say, ‘Well, you need to at the very least induct Atticus, and you should induct these guys.’ The endless kind of justification of that, which wasn’t necessarily fought by me, as much as me telling my manager: ‘Make this f***ing happen…Enough.'”
Reznor also looked into other bands that had multiple members inducted into the Rock Hall, instead of just the “face” of the band. “Again, I wasn’t the one presenting the case, but I felt strongly that it’s a shared recognition,” Reznor said. “And it would certainly feel better to me. It wasn’t rolling a boulder up a hill. They weren’t against it. I don’t know where their minds were at, but I’m glad it turned out the way it did.”
In other news, Reznor has kept busy this year, Nine Inch Nails released not one but two albums this year, “Ghosts V: Together” and “Ghosts VI: Locusts.” Reznor and Ross also scored the feature films “Mank” and “Soul.”
