Iron Maiden Release New Song, ‘The Writing on the Wall’
Listen to a pummeling new song from Iron Maiden, “The Writing on the Wall,” which marks the metal band’s first new music since 2015
Metal titans Iron Maiden have just debuted a music video for their new song, “The Writing on the Wall.” The much-anticipated tune is the first new song the band has released since 2015’s “The Book of Souls,” and it follows several weeks of teasers from the band.
Iron Maiden started dropping hints that they were working on a new album back in 2019, but they kept the progress extremely mysterious. In the past few weeks, the band launched a teaser campaign asking fans that left fans guessing if new music was on the way or something else.
This spring, the band started teasing a special “Belshazzar’s Feast” with the letters “WOTW,” which we now know stand for “Writing on the Wall.” Frontman Bruce Dickinson even appeared on television wearing a shirt with the design, and recently, he invited Iron Maiden fans to attend this so-called “Belshazzar’s Feast” on July 15.
Listen to the pummeling metal track, which marks Iron Maiden’s first new original tune in six years, below. The song was written by Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith, produced by Kevin Shirley and co-produced by Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris.
As for the music video, the animated clip for “The Writing on the Wall” was created by two former Pixar executives, Mark Andrews and Andrew Gordon, who also happen to be big Maiden fans. The two worked on blockbuster Pixar films such as “The Incredibles,” “Monsters” and “Finding Nemo,” so they’re well-versed in animation.
In a statement, Dickinson explains that he has a “pretty clear idea of the concept to accompany the song,” and that it came to life via Zoom discussions.
“I’m very proud of the way the video turned out, it’s more like a mini-film really,” Dickinson added. “I knew it was going to work out as soon as Mark brought my treatment to life with his incredible storyboards – I thought we could make something very special together. I think we did and hope our fans will agree. In fact it’s pretty much created by Maiden fans!”
