Surviving Soundgarden Members ‘Very Likely’ to Make Music Together Again
Kim Thayil of Soundgarden says the surviving band members haven’t written off the idea of getting together again
The members of Soundgarden have often expressed that they have no desire to forget ahead with the band following the death of lead vocalist Chris Cornell in 2017. Now, however, guitarist Kim Thayil seems open to jamming with Soundgarden bandmates Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd again, even if it’s not under the Soundgarden moniker. The big question, of course, is who would be the vocalist for this new group? Time will tell.
In a new interview with Lifeminute TV, Thayil stated, “I think it’s very likely that Matt and Ben and I will play together. I think we know that the songs that we love, that we did for decades with Soundgarden, if we’re gonna play those songs again or hear those songs when we wanna hear them, at best it’ll be with at least the three of us; that’s the closest we’re gonna get at this point.”
He added, “So I think we’d wanna re-explore that and do that at some time in the future. And I think the three of us have an interest in doing new things. We certainly like working together.”
Thayil, Cameron and Shepherd have appeared together a few times since Cornell’s death. They performed together at the 2019 “I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell” benefit concert in Los Angeles. Later, they appeared with one of the musicians from that show, Brandi Carlile, during her show last August in George, Washington, to resurrect a few Soundgarden covers.
Cameron has also stated that he envisions the members of Soundgarden making music together again at some point. “I think most people assume the three of us over and done with since Chris passed away, but that’s not the case,” Cameron told Rolling Stone back in 2020. “It’s nice to know that people still want to hear us play together.”
