Pantera Perform First Show in 21 Years: Setlist and Footage
Watch footage from Pantera’s first show in more than two decades
The newly formed Pantera performed their first show in 21 years on Friday night (Dec. 2) near Mexico City. The show, which marked Pantera’s first gig in more than two decades, featured the band playing a 15-song set at the Hell & Heaven festival.
The new Pantera lineup features classic members Philip Anselmo on vocals and Rex Brown on bass along with guitarist Zakk Wylde of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society and drummer Charlie Benante of Anthrax. Wylde and Benante are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively, which is a huge task, since both are considered among the best musicians in metal music. Some fans have been skeptical of the shows being billed as a reunion with Darrell and Paul gone, but ticket sales have been strong, so there is obviously interest in the new Pantera configuration.
Pantera began the set with “A New Level” and then continued into “Mouth for War,” both off 1992’s seminal “Vulgar Display of Power.” Following the kickoff, the band performed four tracks off 1994’s “Far Beyond Driven: “Strength Beyond Strength,” “Becoming,” “I’m Broken” and “Use My Third Arm.” A few other favorites included “5 Minutes Alone,” “Cowboys From Hell” and “Walk,” the latter which closed out the set. The band also covered Black Sabbath classic “Planet Caravan.”
Pantera’s set at the Hell & Heaven festival marks their first date of a Latin American tour, which runs through a Dec. 18 gig show at Knotfest Brazil in São Paulo. It also marks the beginning of a major run for Pantera, as the band are also schedule to perform European shows next year, as well as open for Metallica’s 2023-2024 North American tour.
