Linkin Park Release ‘Friendly Fire,’ Announce Greatest Hits Album
Linkin Park have a new, career-spanning greatest hits album, “Papercuts (Singles Collection 2000-2023),” dropping on April 12 via Warner Records. They made the announcement on Friday (Feb. 23) and also released “Friendly Fire,” a previously unreleased song with vocals from the late, great Chester Bennington.
The “Papercuts” track list features a bevy of the nu-metal band’s biggest hits, including early songs such as “In the End” and “Somewhere I Belong” to newer songs, such as “One More Light.” The set also features some rarities that were never hits. The set will arrive on all digital platforms and CD, cassette, and various vinyl variants, including a Zoetrope picture disc and limited edition colors.
Linkin Park teased “Friendly Fire” earlier this wee, posting, “We’re falling apart for no reason/ We’re pulling the trigger in a useless war. If we go back and go into the black/ What are we fighting for?” Bennington asks. Check out the music video, directed and edited by Mark Fiore, below. The song is a synth-heavy song recorded during the band’s 2017 “One More Light” sessions.
Of the song, guitarist Brad Delson said in a release, “‘Friendly Fire’ was always one of our favorite songs from the One More Light sessions. Something about it wasn’t quite right so as close as it got to the finish line, we chose to set it aside for later. When we started looking for an unreleased track to include on our greatest hits collection, I was blown away by the power of the song, the power of the storytelling, the power of the vocal, the sonic landscape and I actually thought that it was closer than maybe we had realized at the time.”
Delson added, “We got together to work on it and connect some of the missing pieces that for whatever reason hadn’t revealed themselves during the recording of One More Light. I can’t wait for people to hear it. It’s such a beautiful, compelling, heartbreaking, hopeful story and it really resonates with me today.”
“Papercuts” is the latest in a round of greatest-hits type releases from Linkin Park. The band also recently released a “Hybrid Theory” 20th anniversary box set and “Meteora” 20th anniversary box set.
