Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024: Ozzy Osbourne, Cher and More
It’s always a big deal when the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame unveils its new class of inductees. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 class, as is often the case, features artists from a range of genres, including metal, rock, pop and hip-hop. That said, often times, it garners some negative attention from rock and metal fans who see other genres included.
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024
Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Matthews Band, Cher, A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige, Peter Frampton, Foreigner, and Kool & The Gang have been selected to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony set for Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 19. On top of that, Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield have been selected to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Excellence category. They’re all part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024.
Other inductees include Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Big Mama Thornton. Those artists be given the Musical Influence Award. Entertainment producer Suzanne de Passe will also get the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
An international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry determined who would make it into the Rock Hall. To be eligible, a nominee’s first recording must have been released at least 25 years ago.
The isn’t the first rodeo for Osbourne. He was previously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the classic metal band Black Sabbath in 2006. Now, he’s being honored for his solo work.
For Cher, she’s finally getting honored after years of being eligible, as she was eligible in 1991. What’s more, Sonny and Cher haven’t been inducted into the Rock Hall, so this is truly a first for her.
The finalists who didn’t make the cut this year include Oasis, Mariah Carey, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Jane’s Addiction, Eric B. & Rakim and Lenny Kravitz. I expected to see Kravitz inducted, as he’s the kind of multi-genre musician who the Rock Hall usually embraces. But, chances are, he’ll be in the running again down the road.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 induction ceremony is set for the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will stream live on Disney+. If you don’t have Disney+, you’ll still be able to watch the festivities on Hulu after its premiere. The show will also get a special broadcast airing on ABC later.
In other news, Ozzy Osbourne recently stepped down from playing live shows, or at least touring. It’s murky if he’ll ever do big gigs again, but he’s not open to doing full-scale touring again. That said, I’d be surprised if Osbourne didn’t perform at the Rock Hall ceremony.
“He won’t tour again but we are planning on doing two more shows to say goodbye as he feels like, ‘I have never said goodbye to my fans and I want to say goodbye properly,'” Sharon recently said via Rolling Stone UK. She also said that his two farewell concerts would happen in his hometown of Birmingham, probably the major soccer stadium Villa Park.
