Famed Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has released a new song, “Deified,” in conjunction with his recently announced cologne of the same name. I honestly never thought I would see the day when a member of Black Sabbath would release his own cologne, but the time is here, and you know what? I’m not mad about it.

Black Sabbath Great Tony Iommi, ‘Deified’: Song Review

“Deified” is an epic, glorious song, penned by Iommi, offering a large dose of the guitarist’s seasoned guitar playing, as well as an orchestral chorus, making this a very theatrical piece of work. For those who have always wanted to hear Iommi really stretch his wings and go crazy with his guitar playing, he does just that on “Deified.” Musically, “Deified” takes you on a heavy metal journey, complete with intense guitar playing, heavy rhythms and wild keys. It’s the perfect fix for those missing new Sabbath tunes. I would love to get new Sabbath, but it’s never happening. While Ozzy’s solo music is great, I’m so happy to get new music from one of Ozzy’s bandmates in Black Sabbath.

“Deified” isn’t Iommi’s first cologne. He actually released his debut cologne, “Scent of Dark,” three years ago, along with a song by the same name. So, it’s pretty much what he’s doing this time around. In a statement about the new song, the guitarist said that “‘Deified’ is a heavier, more medieval track than ‘Scent of Dark.’ We’ve added voices and beefed up the overall sound.”

Iommi created “Deified” with a handful of other expert musicians, including keyboardist Mike Exeter, who also co-produced the track with Iommi, drummer Karl Brazil and bass player Laurence Cottle. That song has orchestration by Ben Andrew. So, it’s quite a solid group of musicians and artists that Iommi has gathered together to make his vision become a reality.

Along with the new song, Iommi has released a mainly animated music video, which was crafted under the direction of Sergio Momo, the CEO of the fragrance company Xerjoff. On X (formerly Twitter), Iommi commented, “The animation tells of a profound and powerful story.” Iommi has also released a “roundtable discussion” video that features Iommi and Momo, as well as some others. Watch both the music video for “Deified” and roundtable discussion below.

Overall, I give “Deified” high marks for delivering some solid, real-deal heavy metal during a time when there isn’t enough of that to go around. With Sabbath done recording new music, it’s refreshing to see Iommi fill that void with his solo tracks. While “Deified” does get daring on some guitar parts, I’d love to hear Iommi go even further and really release something that’s unexpected. I’m not saying he should veer from heavy metal, but I don’t think there’s any harm in trying something new with his solo music. Maybe he’ll do that the next time around. Hopefully we won’t have to wait until for a new cologne from Iommi to get new music from him.
