Influential German thrash metal band Destruction have announced their 16th studio album, “Birth of Malice,” out March 7 via Nuclear Blast Records. On top of the new album announcement, the band has released the video for the album’s second single, simply called “Destruction.”

“Destruction,” the song, is a swooping, hard-charging, thrashing metal anthem, as one would expect from a band of Destruction’s pedigree. It has a live sound, which is cool to hear from a studio record. Destruction are known for their intense live shows, and it really captures that energy and drive. The music video for the song features live performance footage of the band, as well as fans, so it pairs well with the track.

‘Destruction,’ the Singles,’ is the ‘Perfect Opener’ for ‘Birth of Malice’

“The crushing song ‘Destruction’ is the perfect opener for this album: It builds a bridge between our old-school sound and riffing, including song title phrases from classic Destruction tracks and more shredding and melodic twin lead guitars that will pinch your brain with its razorsharp leads,” the band said in a collective statement. “The message ‘we are Destruction;’ unites us with our fans worldwide and manifests the bond we have together!”

Longtime Destruction frontman Schmier noted that the video was recorded in São Paulo, Brazil, which he calls “one of the top-notch capitals of metal around the globe and a city that means a lot to us as a band.” He also said that he has a personal connection with that town.

“We played here for the first time in 1989 and have returned countless times for amazing concerts, festivals, visits… I feel at home here,” he said. “Many friends live in this crazy town. I got my first tattoo, the Release from Agony album cover, in São Paulo. We met Sepultura here the first time and the fans are simply mind-blowing!”

He continued, “We wanted to catch the energy of a Destruction show and appreciate the faithful fans that breathe thrash metal to the core. Without them we are nothing, the lyrics of this song honor and acknowledge our supporters, they are our backbone, they are Destruction!”

“Destruction” marks the second single off the album, the first being “No Kings – No Masters,” which the band released in June. Destruction recorded the album Switzerland’s Little Creek Studio by V.O. Pulver. The band’s guitarist, Martin Furia, mixed and mastered it at The Black Mancave in Hannover, Germany.

Audio Ink Radio caught up with Schmier during the pandemic, when Destruction was one of the first bands in the world to hold a concert. “I think it’s going to feel weird to go out again,” he said in our June 2020 interview. “I know already how it is now that the restaurants are back open, and more and more people are on the streets now, and borders are open also everywhere now, again. It feels like of strange because after three months on lockdown, it already feels long to be free again. You get used to the circumstances.”
