Alex Lifeson Makes Final Decision on If Rush Will Reunite
The surviving members of Rush have often said that they won’t, under any circumstance, reunite, but one has to wonder if that’s really the case, since Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee are so close and actually jam with each other on a regular basis. What could be the harm in a little reunion to please longtime fans and new fans who are just now discovering the beauty of the band?
Alex Lifeson Talks Rush’s Future, or Non-Future
Well, those hoping for a Rush reunion don’t seem like they’re going to get one at any point soon, if ever. Speaking in a January 16 interview, Lifeson said he thinks doing some kind of a Rush reunion would really just make them a “top Rush tribute band.”
In the interview with music expert
, says that he has his weekly jams with Lee on his calendar and that the two even play Rush songs together when they jam. He says it’s just good for them and doesn’t mean they’re itching to do a reunion of any kind.“It’s good to jam with friends as you get older,” Lifeson told Classic Rock magazine. “I need to play. Once a week I go to Ged’s — it’s in the calendar — keep my fingers moving, play Rush stuff, new jams. We do record it, but I couldn’t even begin to tell you where it’ll go.”
Not that Lifeson has bad memories of the reunion the guys already did. He started to reflect on his onstage reunion with Lee at the tribute concerts for Taylor Hawkins in 2022, and he has fond memories of it. But, now that Rush has lost late, great drummer Neil Peart, Lifeson is happy with the legacy that the three of them have left and doesn’t want to change that.
Lifeson Does Still, Sometimes, Have the Desire to Tour Again
But, that doesn’t mean Lifeson doesn’t have some desire to tour again.
“Some days I wake up wanting to go out and tour again and some days I don’t,” Lifeson said. “For 40 years Rush included Neil, and I don’t think putting some new version together would have the same magic.”
Lifeson also talked about Rush’s final shows in 2015. When he thinks about those gigs, Lifeson says that Rush “went out on a high note playing as well as ever with one of our best stage shows on ‘R40.’ I guess I’d rather be remembered for that legacy than returning as the top Rush tribute band.”
At least there’s a little hope for fans, though, because Lifeson and Lee have talked about performing and even recording new music together, on top of their regular jams. It wouldn’t be a formal reunion, though. But, just seeing these guys together again on the stage or on a single would be great.
Either way, Lifeson is keeping busy. He recently announced a new album with his band Envy of None, which will mark their sophomore LP. The set, titled “Stygian Wavz,” will hit stores on March 14. Pre-orders for the set are available via the Envy of None website.
