It’s obvious that Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest classic rock bands of their era. Without Zeppelin and the band’s folk-influenced hard rock music, it’s difficult to imagine what rock or metal music would have evolved into during the late-1960s, 1970s and beyond. You’d be hard-pressed to find any music experts who doesn’t agree that Zeppelin is one of the most influential bands of the rock and metal movements. Some even believe they’re the greatest rock band ever.

Now, a documentary about Led Zeppelin, “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” aims to take fans and listeners inside one of the greatest bands of all time.

Led Zeppelin Members Remember Their First Time Jamming Together

The makers of “Becoming Led Zeppelin” have released a new teaser clip to give fans a taste of what’s to come in the Zep documentary. In the video clip, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin talk about their memories from the first time they ever played together. It had to be such a unique experience to jam with people who were obviously their musical soulmates.

“I said the first number that I want to do is ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’,'” guitarist Jimmy Page says in the clip, referring to a track he had recorded with his band the Yardbirds in 1966. “We just kept playing it, doing little solo breaks and all the rest of it and [lead vocalist] Robert [Plant]’s improvising.”

Bass player John Paul Jones talked about the moment when he first heard Plant singing with them.

“I was expecting some cool soul singer, and there’s this screaming maniac with this fantastic voice and fantastic range,” he said. “I was, like, ‘What are you doing up there? You’ll hurt yourself, man.'”

Plant added that the experience “was devastating because it seemed like that is what I had been waiting for.”

Fans won’t have to wait long to see “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” because the film will reach IMAX theaters on February 7 and then released to regular theaters on February 14. Advanced tickets are available for the showings.

‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ Features Rare Archive Footage

So, what should classic rock listeners expect from this documentary and what sets it apart from the many other movies about Zeppelin out there? As  writer and producer Allison McGourty told The Upcoming in a 2021 interview, the goal of the movie “is for the viewer to have a profound musical and visual experience.”

“All the archive was scanned at 4k and we went to extraordinary lengths to track down original negatives and prints whilst staying true to the specifics of each scene we were illustrating,” she added.

Filmmakers had direct feedback and direction from band members themselves.

“Robert Plant told me early on, ‘It is important to capture the freneticism of that first year,’  and so I wanted the audience to leave the theatre feeling like they have been swept along with the band on this roller coaster journey,” she added.

Audio Ink Radio named Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” one of the best classic rock songs of all time in a September 2024 feature, noting that, “Led Zeppelin walk that fine line between hard rock and the start of the metal genre. But, at their core, they’re a classic rock band.”
