Grammys 2025: Rock and Metal Winners List
The 2025 Grammy Awards are here, and with it comes a handful of honors for those in the rock and metal words. Sure, true hard rock and heavy metal often get a backseat to other genres of music during the Grammy Awards, but we should still be proud of these warriors who are carrying the torch of heavy music.
One of the biggest thrills of the night for metalheads is the Best Metal Performance Grammy. While it’s true that the decision has sometimes been a head-scratcher, from Jethro Tull beating out Metallica to Tenacious D somehow getting the honor with a spoofy release, sometimes, the Grammys get it right. When Megadeth got their first Grammy in 2016 for “Dystopia,” metal fans around the world cheered, even though the Academy somehow played Metallica music as they were accepting that award. But, no matter how you look at it, it’s just nice to get props from your peers by getting a Grammy Award.
So, with that in mind, two of the most anticipated categories of the night were the Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album categories. Best Metal Performance was a competition between Gojira, Judas Priest, Knocked Loose (featuring Poppy), Metallica and Spiritbox. For the Best Rock Album category, it was largely older acts, including Pearl Jam, Green Day, the Black Crowes, the Rolling Stones, IDLES and Fontaines D.C. Of those artists, the final two are the only newer acts, so most of this category was packed with classic rock veterans.
When it came to women in these categories, a few nominees were female, including Marina Viotta, with Gojira, Poppy, with Knocked Loose, St. Vincent and Spiritbox. Annie Clark was also nominated as a songwriter for St. Vincent’s “Broken Man.” While that might not seem like many women, it’s actually a great showing compared to previous years. Remember that there was a time when rock and metal bands hardly ever had females in the mix, so it’s good progress.
