Classic rock is the kind of genre that has such beloved, longstanding songs that they really beg to be covered. The greatest classic rock cover songs pay tribute to the originals while also adding a new spice and flavor. Also, some classic rock songs that are coupled with famous artists are actually cover songs, and many people don’t know they weren’t originally from said artist or band. Get ready to rock, because Audio Ink Radio is highlighting some of the greatest classic rock cover songs, including some that may surprise you.

Best Classic Rock Cover Songs

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll”

When you hear Joan Jett & The Blackhearts’ classic track “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” you probably don’t think of it being a cover song. But, this track is actually a cover and was first recorded by London glam rockers the Arrows in 1975. While the track didn’t chart too much, Jett made it a huge hit, so it was good times for all.

The Animals, “House of the Rising Sun”

A lot of great artists have covered “House of the Rising Son,” and one that comes to mind is Five Finger Death Punch with their 2013 version that charted all over rock radio. But, in reality, the Animals’ version was also a cover. “House of the Rising Son” was a traditional folk song, also known as Rising Sun Blues, and the Animals just made it into a rock hit overnight. Good job, guys.

The Clash, “I Fought The Law”

It’s hard to think of the Clash as a cover band, because they obviously aren’t, but their massive hit, “I Fought The Law,” was a cover tune. The song was first recorded by Buddy Holly’s backing band the Crickets, and Joe Strummer and Mick Jones decided to cover it for their “Cost of Living” EP, which arrived in May 1979. They did an incredible job, and the song was an instant hit.

Staind, “Sober”

This is stretching it for a classic rock cover, because many don’t consider Staind or Tool classic rock. But, both bands have been around for decades at this point, so we’re going with it. Staind don’t do many covers, but Aaron Lewis and company have a special version of Tool’s “Sober” that will send goosebumps down your arms. Somehow, Lewis’ voice matched Maynard James Keenan so well. Staind have also released covers of a few other solid covers, notably Alice in Chains’ “Nutshell,” but “Sober” stands out.

Thin Lizzy, “Whiskey in the Jar”

“Whisky in the Jar” was a traditional Irish folk ballad about a highwayman. The first group to really popularize the tune was the Dubliners in 1967 with their version of the song off their release, “More of the Hard Stuff.” But, this track really took off when Thin Lizzy covered it in 1972 single. They’re still known for this rollicking track.

Van Halen, “You Really Got Me”

It would be nearly impossible to put together this tally of the greatest classic rock cover songs without mentioning Van Halen with their cover of “You Really Got Me.” The track was originally recorded by “The Kinks,” and Van Halen amped it up with a fresh sound. Eddie Van Halen and company really made it their own with some vibrant riffs and a cool attitude.
