Sure, some people say that music is just music. But, true music enthusiasts and experts know that those beautiful sounds are more than just something to listen to in the background of life. At times, rock songs have truly had an impact on the world and even changed the world. It’s not common that you get one of these songs that really has such a universal impact on the world that it causes change, but when it happens, it’s special. To celebrate these memorable songs of history, Audio Ink Radio presents its roster of rock songs that have helped change the world.

Rock Songs That Have Impacted the World

Aretha Franklin, “Respect”

One could argue that Aretha Franklin doesn’t qualify as rock music, but the Motown sound had a lot to do with the genesis of rock ‘n’ roll, so we’re going with it. “Respect,” originally written and performed by Otis Redding, is an anthem for change and dignity. While Redding first released the track in 1965, Franklin took it to a new level in 1967 with her version, which resonated with women fighting for equal rights at the time. Sadly, the desire for respect when it isn’t given is a theme that stays with us generation after generation.

Bob Dylan, “Blowin’ in the Wind”

Bob Dylan shook the folk and rock world in 1963 with “Blowin’ in the Wind,” a folk ballad that turned into an anthem for the civil right and anti-war movements of the 1960s. It’s a beautiful, cutting song with a strong message, and it undeniably helped change the world.

John Lennon, “Imagine”

It would be impossible to leave John Lennon and “Imagine” off this tally, because it’s truly one of the most celebrated rock songs of all time dealing with peace, live and unity. The classic rock track, released in 1971, is still relevant today, especially for people hoping for a world without war and conflict.

The Beatles, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

While the Beatles didn’t make some grand societal statement with “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” the band truly changed the music world in 1963 with the catchy tune. The band really changed popular music at the time, and “I Want to Hold Your Hand” has proven to be influential in music for decades to come.

U2, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”

U2 are known for their humanitarian efforts, and one shining example of a song that is more than just a rock track is “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” The song tells the tale of the atrocities of violence against unarmed civilian protesters in Northern Ireland. While the track calls for peace, it’s certainly one of U2’s most fiery anthems.

USA for Africa, “We Are the World”

In 1985, many of music’s biggest names came together for a good cause. Musicians from every genre, from grunge to pop, came together to release a single to raise awareness and funds for famine relief in Africa. “We Are the World” was a massive success and showed that people can really come together to benefit the greater good in music.
