Summer is the time when rock and metal festivals really flourish, but there’s something to be said for hitting up a rock show in the fall. Summer, well, can be hot, and standing outside in the middle of a crowd of thousands of people in 90-degree weather can be taxing. So, sometimes, going to a fall show feels like the best experience.
Now, a female lineup of major rock and metal acts has been announced for a special fall music event.
Women in Rock Rule Fall Festival
Radio station 93X in the Twin Cities has announced that its “Family Reunion” show will take place at Xcel Energy Center on Friday, September 19. The bill features Evanescence headlining, as well as Poppy, Dorothy and Black Map. Now, it’s not a totally female bill, because Black Map features an all-male lineup for Ben Flanagan, Mark Engles and Chris Robyn. But, Evanescence, Poppy and Dorothy are all fronted by women, so it’s certainly a bill that celebrates women in rock.
Poppy is coming off a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for her performance of “Suffocate” with metal band Knocked Loose. It wasn’t the first time she has been nominated for a Grammy, either, as Poppy was also nominated for Best Metal Performance Grammy for “Bloodmoney” in 2021. Meanwhile, Evanescence’s debut album, “Fallen,” was nominated for six Grammy Awards back in 2004 and received two that year.
Speaking with Blunt Magazine in January, Poppy was asked about how today’s music audience should “navigate the line between fandom and idol worship.”
“They should find something they are passionate about and pursue it,” she replied. “When people start imagining narratives and relationships for them based on images or videos they post on a social platform, it will feel strange and they will want to distance themselves from the response.”
She added, “They will want others to just enjoy what they create without the intrusive actions. They will experience inner conflict because they appreciate the spectator but do not want them to cross the line into involving themselves in their personal affairs. So, find something to enjoy.”
Female Musician Poppy Talks Musical ‘Regrets’
In a separate interview with Trib Live in May, she talked about if she had any musical “regrets.” She doesn’t.
“I think every moment is an educational moment and it always has a time and a place,” she said “Even if it’s something I’m not currently drawn to that I made in the past, it still had relevance to me at that time.” She added that her journey has been “entirely unexpected with lots of twists and turns, erratic shake-ups also at times very slippery inclines and always marvelously unexpected.”
Over the years, Poppy has gone back and forth between doing pop music and much heavier metal music. So, she was asked about Trib Live about what keeps drawing her back to doing the heavy metal style of music, since that’s what she has released lately.
“I feel like pulling back implies I am returning to something, when I really am just moving forward,” she said. “The possibilities are endless.”
