It’s so wild to think that Black Sabbath is no longer. The legendary heavy metal band performed their final show on July 5 at the “Back to the Beginning” concert at Villa Park in the group’s hometown of Birmingham, England. Their performance rounded out an all-day event featuring not only Black Sabbath playing their final show but a slew of rock and metal favorites.
From Mastodon kicking off the event with a rousing performance to a bevy of supergroups performing together to bands such as Metallica and Pantera, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event that any metal enthusiast should love. It’s really mind-blowing all of the different bands that performed that day, all of them playing legendary sets, but especially Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band.
Historic Announcement from Tom Morello
While the concert was about saying farewell to Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne with one final show, it was also about raising money for charity. It’s great to see these iconic rockers doing good with their talents.
In addition to “Back to the Beginning” being an incredible show for those final performances by Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne, the event also raised nearly $200 million to be divided among three charities. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who was the musical director of the all-day show, shared a graphic on Tuesday, July 8, on Instagram reporting that “more than $190 million will be donated to houses and hospitals for children.” The funds will be split between Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice, plus detailed by the BBC.
A reported 5 million people watched the event’s paid livestream, and the cost for the livestream was $30 per virtual ticket. All the musicians who performed at the event did so for no fee, so al of the proceeds went directly to charity.
The concert made for some big firsts, and one of those was Ozzy meeting Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses for the first time. Rose took to X to state, “Axl shared his own feelings about meeting the Prince of Darkness, writing on X/Twitter, “Wow!! What an EVENT!! Extremely overwhelming!! Really great crowd!! Was very emotional for everyone!! MET OZZY!! (Crazy we’d never met b4!!) He was really great!! Was great to meet Sabbath!!”
He added, “Was hard as I imagine for anyone to watch [Ozzy’s] struggles while at the same time everyone was rooting for him n’ massively respecting the challenges he took on n’ HE DID IT!!!! Was great to meet Ozzy’s family n’ see friends n’ peeps in all bands n’ the business. A HUGE THANK YOU again to Ozzy, Sharon, Black Sabbath n’ all the fans for having us!!”
The fans loved it, too. On a video posted on YouTube by a fan of the show, which was eventually taken down, one commenter said, “We were never going to see the original Beatles again. Nor, would we ever be able to see the original Led Zepplin. But goddamn it we got to see the original Black Sabbath one final time. We were alive in the perfect time.”
