Aerosmith famously played their final show on September 9, 2023, at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. It was a bittersweet moment for both the band and their legions of listeners, because it was unexpected. The band was supposed to embark on a massive “Peace Out” farewell tour, but that trek was shortened due to lead singer Steven Tyler suffering a vocal cord injury. After the news of Tyler’s vocal cord injury broke, the band announced that they would have to retire.
So, will Aerosmith ever play a show together again? That’s a question that many have had in their minds the past few years, and now, it appears we finally have an answer.
Joe Perry Has Unexpected News on Aerosmith
Aerosmith’s longtime guitarist Joe Perry is giving some hope that there will be at least one more chance to celebrate the band. Not only that, be he’s leaving the door open for not just one big reunion gig but perhaps a collection of them.
Speaking on Sirius XM’s Trunk Nation, Perry was asked about the band possibly getting together for one final show, even after Tyler and the group officially announced their retirement. It’s also worth noting that even though Aerosmith haven’t played together as a band since that September 2023 gig, Perry and Tyler got together to do a set for a charity show in May of this year, and they performed a handful of Aerosmith songs.
When asked about doing one final big Aerosmith concert, Perry said, “We’re talking about it.” That’s promising. He added, “I mean, except for like, anything on the calendar, we’re all alive and well, so, you know, we’ll just have to see, you know? I know there’s got to be at least another Aerosmith gig, and I’m not looking forward to putting the set list together for that one, but I don’t know, man. We’ll just have to see.”
Perry then had some deep comments about how he goes about performing with Aerosmith. “You know, I’ve always played, like every show’s the last one, I hate to sound like it’s a downer, but, you know, I give it up every night, you know?” Perry said. “And I don’t know, you know, it was certainly, the first gig we did for that tour, that got canceled, we certainly felt like it was gonna be another one, but, you know … happens.”
How Healthy is Steve Perry?
Of course, a big part of doing a final gig is whether Tyler will be able to do it with his vocal problems. So, Perry was asked if Tyler is healthy enough to do a full concert. His answer was hopeful, stating, “You know, I think he would. I think it’s just a matter of getting there⦔
Even though, Perry isn’t touring with Aerosmith right now, he’s keeping busy in his other project, aptly named The Joe Perry Project, which will hit the road on a North American tour in August. The band brings together Perry with Black Crowes vocalist Chris Robinson and Stone Temple Pilots members Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz, as well as Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford and touring keyboard player Buck Johnson.
