For band as big as Nine Inch Nails, it’s always a huge cause for celebration when they announce new music. Well, Nine Inch Nails are officially back. Trent Reznor and company released their latest studio album, “Ghosts VI: Locusts,” back in 2020, and now, five years later, they’re releasing their next full-length record.
This is a special one, too, because it comprises the “TRON: Ares” soundtrack, which features all original music by Nine Inch Nails. The album, simply called “TRON: Ares (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack),” will arrive on Sept. 19 on Interscope Records.
Disney’s ‘TRON: Ares’ Featuring Nine Inch Nails
Disney’s “TRON: Ares” will reach U.S. theaters on Oct. 10. “A highly sophisticated Program, Ares, is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission,” the movie’s synopsis from IMDb states. “The feature film is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges,” Disney notes. Also, “Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.”
A press release promises that the new music comprises one of Nine Inch Nails’ “most compelling albums, humming with menace, melancholy and momentum as analog soul and digital dread collide.”
The “TRON: Ares” soundtrack also marks the first-ever movie score by Nine Inch Nails, Reznor and Atticus Ross of the band have composed 20 scores under their own names. They’ve also scored two Oscars, three Golden Globes a Grammy Award and an Emmy.
Ahead of the new album, Nine Inch Nails have also released the album’s first single, “As Alive As You Need Me to Be,” marking the first new song from the band in five years. Listen to “As Alive As You Need Me To Be” below.
Reznor and company will also hit the road on the North American leg of their “Peel It Back” world tour starting on Aug. 6 at Oakland Arena in Oakland, California. The tour will include 26 dates, including plenty of sold-out stops.
Nine Inch Nails’ History
“Founded in 1988 by Reznor, Nine Inch Nails is widely considered one of the most innovative, influential acts in modern music,” a press release boasts of the band. “Known for fusing industrial, electronic, rock and ambient sounds into emotionally raw and sonically aggressive compositions, the band has won two Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.”
The group’s multi-platinum studio albums include their 1989 debut, “Pretty Hate Machine”; 1994’s “The Downward Spiral”; and 1999’s “The Fragile,” the latter which was their first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. They also hit No. 1 with 2005’s “With Teeth.”
“As a work by Nine Inch Nails, ‘TRON: Ares’ is a bracing departure from these acclaimed scores,” the band says in a statement. “Its architecture in sound: pulsating synths, distorted textures, and haunting melodies. Not one second of orchestra. Instead, the album erupts with the full force of Nine Inch Nails, breaking boundaries and redefining what a score can be.”
