Metal legend Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable music with both Black Sabbath and his solo project. Osbourne passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, and even though he was ill, the death came as a surprise, since he had just performed his final show with Black Sabbath and his solo band earlier in the month.

“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” Osbourne’s family said in a statement at the time. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.”

Ozzy Osbourne Funeral Wishes

Osbourne’s funeral is being held on Wednesday, July 30, and as it turns out, Osbourne had given some wishes on his funeral years ago. More than a decade before passing away, Osbourne told The Times what he was thinking of for his funeral and said that he wanted to avoid it being a “mope-fest.”

“I honestly don’t care what they play at my funeral; they can put on a medley of Justin Bieber, Susan Boyle and ‘We Are the Diddymen’ if it makes them happy,” he said in 2011, answering a fan’s question about what he would want at his funeral for a Dr. Ozzy Osbourne column. He added that he wanted there to be “no harping on the bad times.”

“A bit of planning is the right thing to do for the family you leave behind. It’s worth remembering that a lot of people see nothing but misery their whole lives,” he continued. “So by any measure, most of us in this country — especially rock stars like me — are very lucky. That’s why I don’t want my funeral to be sad. I want it to be a time to say ‘thanks.'”

Zakk Wylde Remembers Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde has been mourning the passing of Ozzy, who was not only his colleague but also his friend. Wylde joined Osbourne’s solo band in 1987 and became a focal point of the singer’s solo music. Wylde grew up in Bayonne, New Jersey, and during his time learning his instrument, he was heavily influenced by Ozzy’s music, and especially his work with late guitarist Randy Rhoads.

“Oz was just the best,” Wylde told Guitar World in an interview following the singer’s death. “I have my father, who was a World War II veteran; and then Ozzy, who was almost like an older brother. There was almost a 20-year age gap between us. With our relationship, there was the fun drinking – but if I ever needed advice, I could talk to him.”

He added, “There were issues on how to drink and how not to drink; you know, the important factors in life.”

According to the Associated Press, “Thousands of Black Sabbath fans were paying their respects Wednesday to frontman Ozzy Osbourne as his hearse made its way through the streets of Birmingham, the English city where he grew up and where the band was formed in 1968.”
