A lot of bands from the 1990s are no longer together and making music, so it’s refreshing when a band from that era is still active. It’s wild to think about, but the 1990s were more than 30 years ago, so it’s natural that some bands from that era are no longer active.

But, some bands from that alternative rock heyday are still alive and well. Now, a beloved alternative rock band from the ’90s is releasing a new live album that celebrates one of their most beloved studio sets.

Radiohead has announced “Hail to the Thief Live Recordings 2003-2009,” a new live album that “allowed the band to re-evaluate their relationship with their sixth studio album, ‘Hail to the Thief,'” according to a release. In addition to the album news, Radiohead also released a live video performance of “There, There” from Buenos Aires off the album.

The live set is out now and available for download and streaming. Plus, there’s a special pressing that will arrive on October 31. As for what’s on the live set, it features performances of songs in London, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, and Dublin between 2003 and 2009. The album was mixed by Ben Baptie and mastered by Matt Colton.

The Story Behind Radiohead’s New Live Release

“In the process of thinking of how to build arrangements for the Shakespeare Hamlet/Hail To The Thief theatre production, I asked to hear some archive live recordings of the songs,” Thom Yorke of Radiohead said in a statement. “I was shocked by the kind of energy behind the way we played. I barely recognized us, and it helped me find a way forward.”

He added, “We decided to get these live recordings mixed and released (it would have been insane to keep them for ourselves). It has all been a very cathartic process. We very much hope you enjoy them.”

It’s so great to see that Yorke felt like going through the live recordings was “cathartic,” as he put it. It’s also cute to see that he says it would have been “insane” for the guys to keep the songs to themselves, so it’s good that he is sharing them with the world.

The one-off vinyl pressing will also available in a limited-edition red colorway from independent stores and on cyan-colored vinyl, exclusively from Radiohead’s W.A.S.T.E. store.

Thom Yorke of Radiohead Co-Creates ‘Hamlet Hail to the Thief’

In other band news, Yorke recently co-created “Hamlet Hail to the Thief,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famed “Hamlet,
set to a deconstructed score of reworked songs from “Hail to the Thief.” It’s just another example of how imaginative York is and what he brings to alternative rock music.

Radiohead’s most recent album is 2016’s “A Moon Shaped Pool,” so it’s been almost a decade since fans have gotten new music from the band. Hopefully this live release is a sign that Yorke and company are working on new music, too. It’s time for Yorke and company to deliver some new music, because they’re one of the few 1990s powerhouses left.
