Heavy metal mavens Kittie were an anomaly when they started out in the metal world. Who had heard of a metal band comprised of only women? Even though women in metal had been a thing for a while, with artists like Lita Ford and Joan Jett paving the way, it was still very rare to see a band comprised of only females making metal music.
So, Kittie changed musical history with their presence in the 1990s and early 2000s. The band released their debut album, Spit,” in January of 2000, and it earned international attention. Now, Kittie are celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Spit” with “Spit XXV,” a four-track EP honoring that gold-certified debut album.
Celebrating 25 Years of Kittie’s Debut Album, ‘Spit’
The reissue of Kittie’s “Spit” offers “freshly updated and re-recorded versions,” according to a release, of four of the albums biggest songs, including the popular “Brackish” and the title track, “Spit.” All of the new versions were produced by Garth Richardson, who produced the band’s original album and worked with Kittie back in 1999 at EMAC Studios.
“Spit XXV” will drop on September 19 on Sumerian Records. In honor, the band has released a new song, the title track, called “Spit XXV.” The pummeling heavy metal anthem is indicative of Kittie then and today.
Of the 25th anniversary of “Spit” and the release in honor of the album, Kittie singer and guitarist Morgan Lander says, “It’s hard to believe that 25 years after its release, and almost 30 years since Kittie began, people are still talking about ‘Spit.’ There is something truly unexplainable in why our debut album is still resonating with people, finding a new audience and has had such a lasting impact on so many.”
She adds, “Reimagining some of these classic songs for the 25th anniversary of ‘Spit’ was a lot of fun and a true testament to their longevity. It reveals just how relevant in the musical landscape they still are today. We were honored to work with Garth again where it all began after more than 2 decades, and doing so was a cool way to pay homage to the past while updating these songs with a modern sound, bringing them into the future.”
The History of Kittie’s Debut Album
Kittie released “Spit” on January 11, 2000, and at the time, Kittie’s band members were just teenagers. “Spit” made them metal names, with the album achieving gold certification with over 660,000 United States sales. As a press release explains, “The album became a defining moment for women in heavy music, with its aggressive sound and uncompromising attitude proving that metal made by women could achieve both critical respect and commercial success during nu-metal’s completely male-dominated peak era.”
The song “Spit” was actually named by Rolling Stone the No. 82 on their “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time” roster in 2023.
Lander spoke with Audio Ink Radio in 2023 about the band getting together to make new music. “It’s definitely something that’s on our to-do list,” Lander said. “It’s something we’ve been really interested in. It’s definitely something we want to do when the timing is right, when the situation is right, and it’s all starting to come together and feel more right. I guess it’s the perfect time.”
