The NFL season kicked off on Thursday, September 4, and now, the season is in full swing. While the league hasn’t revealed who will be playing the Super Bowl yet, they’re filling out some of their performers to sing the National Anthem and provide halftime entertainment for some of the games on tap.

“The Star-Spangled Banner” isn’t an easy song to sing, so you have to be a really good vocalist to pull it off. Over the years, many singers in a variety of genres have been able to do it to great accord, but it’s rare when the NFL taps a heavy metal vocalist to do the honor.

Now, the NFL has done just that and announced that a famed metal singer will perform the national anthem during an upcoming game. However, that singer is a bit of a surprise, since he’s not from the United States.

Metal Singer Announces NFL Performance

Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden has some incredible pipes, and now, he’s apparently been tapped to use those vocal chops for performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Pittsburgh Steelers Game on Sunday, September 14, ahead of the Steelers vs. Seattle Seahawks game.

The official social media account for Acrisure Stadium, where the Steelers play, shared the news in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, September 10.

Dickinson will no doubt do an amazing job at the game, but he’s obviously from the United Kingdom, so it’s a bit weird to have him do the honors. But, it’s all good, and he likely won’t disappoint.

Dickinson also dropped the news during an inerview with Elizabeth Zharoff, which has been shared on X. In the interview, he says that he’s sharing a secret and then talks about the Steelers game.

“I’ll let you into a secret. So, I’ve got to sing the national anthem in Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” he said in the interview. “They’ve asked me to do this. I’m going to do it a cappella and stuff, and as long as you start at the right place, you’re good to go.”

People React to Bruce Dickinson Getting Booked for NFL Game

A few people voiced their thoughts on the booking on social media. In the Instagram post from Acrisure Stadium, one commenters aid, “Don’t get me wrong, I love Iron Maiden and NFL but has America ran out of it’s own artists.” Someone responded to that person and said, “This guy has sang better than any American artist for the past 40 years.”

Another commented, “This is… weird? This isn’t Ozzy (RIP), or Brian Johnson from AC/DC, who both lived in the U.S. for decades and were/are U.S. citizens. This is the most British singer from the most British heavy metal band, who’s never been a resident. If he lapses into ‘God Save the King’ you’ll have to forgive him.”

But, overall, the comments were very positive, with plenty of metalheads cheering for Dickinson getting booked for the gig. So, either way you look at it, he’s an incredible vocalist and will do a great job. In other Maiden news, find Audio Ink Radio’s feature on the best Iron Maiden album of all time.
