The rock ‘n’ roll genre is packed with incredible musicians and bands, so it’s difficult to pick a No. 1 top favorite. But, while the best rock band of all time is an opinion and varies from one person to the next, numbers are a different story, and now, the best-selling rock band of all time has been revealed.

Now, Digital Music News has released a full tally of the top-selling musicians of all time in the United States. While this tally features a bevy of genres, it’s great to see that rock is represented well on the list.

The top-selling artist in the world, according to this roster, isn’t from the U.S. That honor goes to the Beatles. They’ve sold a massive 178 million records, and they’re followed by Garth Brooks, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin and The Eagles to round out the top five.

Looking through this tally, a lot of rock and metal bands are on there, which is great to see for the genre. No. 11 is AC/DC (72 million), No. 13 is The Rolling Stones (66.5 million), No. 14 is Aerosmith (66.5 million) and No. 18 is the mighty Metallica (62 million). Other artists towards the top of the tally include Van Halen, Guns N’ Roses, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, ZZ Top, Rush and Nirvana, to name some.

It was a bit surprising to me to see Nirvana below Def Leppard and Bon Jovi, but they were still fairly high on the tally. In a sense, it makes sense, because Def Leppard and Bon Jovi have been around for longer, so they’ve built up a base over a few more years. Either way, these bands are all fantastic and deserve to be among the best-selling ever.

The History of The Beatles

The Beatles, of course, date back to the 1950s and got huge in the 1960s. “In March 1956, John Lennon, aged 16, and a few of his friends from school played in a skiffle band called the Quarrymen,” notes Historic Newspapers. “After meeting John in the July of that year, Paul McCartney joined the band as a rhythm guitarist and invited his friend George Harrison to watch the band perform.”

Historic Newspapers adds, “George then auditioned to be in the band, but John thought that he was too young, however, after several months of persistence, he performed lead guitar in a performance as was enlisted as their lead guitarist.”

As for their style, Teach Rock adds, “Over the course of an active career that spanned just 10 years, the band released some of the most enduring popular music of the 20th century – a catalog whose influence would be hard to overstate.” Elsewhere, they add, “The band cut their teeth during their early years playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg, Germany, mixing stray original songs with a repertoire heavy on numbers by American Rock and Rollers including Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, and Larry Williams.”
