Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine was good friends with Ozzy Osbourne, so it certainly hit him hard when the metal legend passed way. Since Morello Osbourne were tight, it hit him more than a lot of people when Ozzy passed away. It was a sad moment felt around the world, but even fans can’t begin to imagine what it would feel like to lose Ozzy as a member of his family or close friend.

Morello, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, was so close to Osbourne that he was the musical director for the metal great’s Back to the Beginning concert, which took place in early July, just a few weeks before Osbourne passed away.

During a conversation with Johnny Dare and Loudwire Nights host Chuck Armstrong, Morello talked about his final moments with Ozzy, which he said were funny.

Tom Morello Discusses His Final Moments with Ozzy Osbourne

Morello launched into a detail story about his last moments and words with Osbourne, and they might not be what one would expect. It’s a kind of humorous story.

“This is the last time I saw Ozzy. The day is done,” he said, according to Loudwire. “It’s been great and people have been working on the show for a very long time and we’re all hugging and crying. So we go to the afterparty and finally it’s mellow.”

He continued, “I’m playing pinball with my son. And somebody taps me on the shoulder and I’m in the middle of a multi-ball and I’m like, ‘Get off me.’ And it’s Jack Osbourne because his dad wants to say hi.”

Morell said that he finished his game, “and it’s like, ‘Ozzy would like to say something’ and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ First of all, Ozzy comes to the afterparty, which is crazy right? And so, I got to one last time kiss his head, tell him I love him, thank him for a lifetime of music and his reply was, ‘Could you find Sharon, I want to get the … out of here.'”

Morello laughed after telling the story, adding, “That’s the perfect coda to the day.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Morello talked about how important Ozzy was to him. “Heavy metal music is the music that made me love music and Black Sabbath invented that,” Morello explained. “And then Ozzy Osbourne is the artist that brought Randy Rhoads to the world. And that was the poster that was on my wall when I was practicing eight hours a day.”

Tom Morello Named His Son After Randy Rhoads

If you want to know how much Morello loved Ozzy and Randy Rhoads, just look at Morello’s family. He added, “I named my first son Rhoads Morello in honor of Randy, so I don’t just owe a musical and artistic debt to those guys, it’s a real personal life debt. So when Ozzy and Sharon asked me to be musical director and curate that day, I took it very, very seriously. The idea was to make it the greatest day in the history of heavy metal and I think we did pretty well.”

So, Morello is feeling the weight of the loss of Ozzy, just like us.
