Gorillaz, Andre 3000 and LCD’s James Murphy Team for New Song
Converse project brings together three unlikely collaborators
Put Gorillaz, LCD’s James Murphy and Andre 3000 together, and what do you get? We’re about to find out, as those three artists have signed on to appear in the latest portion of Converse’s “Three Artists. One Song” project. Their one-of-a-kind track, called “DoYaThing,” will be available for a free download on Converse’s official website beginning Feb. 23 in conjunction with a new Gorillaz footwear collection designed by Jamie Hewlett.
Speaking with Billboard, Murphy says the songwriting process between the trio was spontaneous and energizing. “It was literally akin to a bunch of kids playing with toys until someone else said, ‘Ooh! I like that bit!’” Murphy laughed. “DoYaThing” together with Gorillaz leader Damon Albarn and Andre 3000. “Writing the lyrics was the funniest part… one person would be mumble-singing something and another would overhear him and ask, ‘Oh… did you just sing…’ I don’t know… some crazy words that weren’t at ALL what the guy was singing, and those new, misunderstood words could become the hook for a verse. I loved that about it.”
Past musical collaborations produced from Converse’s “Three Artists. One Song” campaign comprise Matt & Kim, Soulja Boy and Andrew W.K. doing the track “I’m A Goner” and the Santigold/Pharrell/Julian Casablancas song “My Drive Thru.” Gorillaz also previously teamed up with Converse to craft their own shoe line.
