Creed ‘Halfway There’ to Recording New Album, Says Scott Stapp
Creed frontman: ‘We spent about three to four weeks together jamming and writing new material’
Post-grunge behemoths Creed have a lot going on this year. Whilst the group are touring this spring for a trek that will have them pulling out their first two, blockbuster rock albums, 1997’s “My Own Prison” and 1999’s “Human Clay” in their entirety, the guys are also working hard on a new album, their follow-up to 2009’s “Full Circle.”
Frontman Scott Stapp says they’re about halfway through recording new songs for the upcoming release. “We spent about three to four weeks together jamming and writing new material,” Stapp told Rolling Stone of the session with original guitarist Mark Tremonti, bass player Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips. “We feel five [new songs] have the symmetry and continuity within themselves and will make the record. So if you want to look at it from that perspective, we’re halfway there.
“We could begin tracking as soon as March, and [if that happens] of course we’ll have a record out this summer. We’re gonna continue to write until we feel we have the strongest, best album we’ve ever done. That’s our goal. If it takes all year to do that and the album doesn’t come out until next year, then so be it.”
Stapp adds that digging back into the band’s catalog and pulling out their older, lesser-known songs for the upcoming tour is helping them to reconnect with their past. “As we’re going through this material, jamming and stuff, I think it brings back the memories of how things were before the success – our relationships and how we looked at what to do, an appreciation for it all,” he said. “It’s definitely rubbing off on the new music.” Stapp is also penning an upcoming book, and for news on that, head to Creed’s artist page.
