Candlebox’s Kevin Martin Describes Band’s Re-Recording of ‘Far Behind’
Candlebox frontman says band looked at two different ways to re-record hit ‘Far Behind’
The men of ‘90s alternative rock band Candlebox are back with their first studio album in four years, “Love Stories and Other Musings,” which arrived earlier this week. The collection features nine shiny new songs, as well as five bonus tracks that are re-recordings of the group’s rock radio staples, such as “Far Behind” and “Cover Me.”
As for the re-recording of “Far Behind,” arguably Candlebox’s biggest hit, frontman Kevin Martin says the band looked at two directions when remaking the song.
“Do we want to play it the way we usually play it, or do we want to play the new version?” Martin explained, speaking with Noisecreep. “When we weigh and pros and cons of everything… when we did the original version, that was a demo that was done a year before we recorded our record for Maverick.
“We tried to reproduce the song in the studio for the first album. The label came back and said, ‘We love the attempt but the original version from the demo is much better.’ I think that was always in the back of our minds and it’s probably been there for the past 20 years. That demo was, for some reason, magical. We wondered if we could go back in the studio now, have fun with it, better it.”
Expect to hear “Far Behind” when Candlebox hits the road to promote “Love Stories and Other Musings” this month. Their trek launches tomorrow (April 7) in Pensacola, Fla., and runs through a May 19 stop at the Emerald Theatre by Detroit. Find a complete list of tour dates on the band’s official site.
