Florence + the Machine’s ‘MTV Unplugged’ Episode to Premiere on Sunday

‘MTV Unplugged’ performance featuring Florence + the Machine airs tonight

Fans have heard about it for months, and now, Florence + the Machine are finally ready to premiere their highly-anticipated “MTV Unplugged” performance. The episode will debut on MTV Easter night at 11 p.m. ET, and the show includes Florence Welch and her band performing their chart-toppers “Dog Days Are Over” and “Shake It Out” accompanied by an orchestra and 10-piece choir. No, kids, this isn’t the “MTV Unplugged” of the ‘90s, which had Nirvana and Pearl Jam performing completely bare-boned.

Florence + the Machine’s set also features Welch covering the traditional country song “Jackson,” which many recall Johnny Cash and June Carter performing, with the one and only Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. Welch also does a striking cover of Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness.”

Can’t catch the show? You’re in luck, as Florence + the Machine will release a live CD/DVD set, simply called “MTV Unplugged — A Live Album,” offering performances from the group’s “MTV Unplugged” episode.

In other Florence + the Machine news, the Welsh band have taped a new song called “Breath of Life,” which will be included on the soundtrack for the new film, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” in theaters June 1. Welch recently told MTV that the recording process for “Breath of Life” was unlike anything she’s experience prior. “We went in and demoed the track, these big, clattering drums, huge bass sounds and everything was very intense… and then we sent that to the guys in LA who composed it,” Welch said. “And it was amazing to see the music we played being turned into this amazing orchestral thing… I nearly wept, it was so emotional.”
